The Fenland SOIL Conference 2025

Our 2025 conference was hosted at The Maltings, Ely, Cambridgeshire, between 28th and 29th January 2025. It brought together key stakeholders with interests in lowland agricultural peat from the Fens, UK and beyond.

Session 1 – Future Fen Scenarios Panel

This session explored the implications of climate change projections in the Fens through the Fens Climate Change Risk Assessment, look into the mitigation strategies being developed by the Environment Agency under the Fens 2100+ project and finally explore the potential challenges associated with soil salinity in the fens. Followed by a short panel Q&A.

Session 2 – Systems Thinking: An Integrated Approach

This session explored the value of a systems approach to landscape management. Megan Hudson updates on Opportunity Mapping, Dr Laurie Friday shares her experiences of Stakeholder Mapping, Prof Brian Reid shared his expertise on Soil Carbon Stocks & broadcaster and author Tom Heap shared his learnings from the research on his book Land Smart.  Followed by a short panel Q&A.

Session 3 – Future Fen Scenarios Panel

This session explored whether or not there is a role for regenerative agriculture in managing lowland agricultural peat. Nick Padwick (Ken Hill Estate), Ian Robertson (Hutchinsons) & Dr Elizabeth Stockdale (NIAB) share their expertise on the technical soil science, whilst Swaantje Marten (WWF) discusses the role of retailers in the debate.
